Butt Bread Casserole… need I say more?

In my family, no one eats “butt bread” aka the heels of a loaf. I didn’t want to let the bread go to waste, so I needed to make a recipe that would put them to good use.

Previously, I made french toast, but it meant that I was flipping french toast for 2 hours. This was unnacceptable to me. There had to be a better solution. Then i remembered the mid-western addage – anything can be a casserole.

This French Toast Casserole we make this once every four to six weeks with the stale heels that are left over. This is a family favorite. Multiple friends in my discord wanted the recipe so… here ya go!

I hope you enjoy Lovies!

Butt Bread CasserolešŸ„

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of bread or the equivelant amount of “Butt Bread”
  • 9 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 tablespoons vanilla
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg and cloves
  • 4 tablespoons butter (kinda optional)
  • 1 cup walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered Sugar (optional)

Steps:

  1. Heat the Oven to 350Ā°F.
  2. While preheating, chop up the bread into bite sized pieces and place on cookie sheet.
  3. Once preheat is complete, put the bread covered cookie sheet in the oven for 20 minutes. This toasts the bite sized pieces and makes it “stale”.
  4. While this is toasting, in a big bowl mix all remaining ingredients, except butter, wisk together.
  5. Pull the toasted bread, and dump into the large bowl with the egg mixture. Stir to coat everything.
  6. There are two options for completing the recipe.
  7. Melt the butter in a 13×9 PYREX casserole dish and use a kitchen basting brush to spread it on the walls of the dish as well.
  8. You want the bread to be as saturated as possible. It is perfectly fine to store in the fridge overnight to cook the next morning. When you are ready to cook, pour into the 13×9.
  9. (Optional) Sprinkle the walnuts over the top.
  10. With the Oven at 350Ā°F. Cover with aluminum foil and slide it in the oven for 30 min.
  11. Remove foil and cook for another 10min.
  12. After removing from the oven, apply a light dusting of powdered sugar and serve with syrup if desired.
  13. All done! Ready to serve and enjoy!
